Giving and Gleaning by Parker Webster
“One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.” (Prov. 11:24)
Someone once said, “We must give more in order to get more. It is the generous giving of ourselves that produces the generous harvest.” Truly, this is what the Proverbs writer was telling us. In order to be blessed bountifully, we must be willing to give liberally, without compromise or condition.
Today, we live in a world that is greedy and hungry for more. Unfortunately, Our culture is unwilling to be benevolent to those in need. Because of our problem with greed, widows, orphans, and homlessness become more and more prevalent.
The verse begins saying, “One who gives freely…” (v.24a). Here, the writer is gving us advice in our giving. From this section, honest and true giving is not restricted or based on terms. Also, we see a benefit from giving freely. Following, we read, “...yet grows all the richer.” Because we are willing to give, and because we give freely, we have the ability to become more rich by God’s grace.
Finally, we see the consequences of those who refuse to give what he should. Notice that the verse does not cover those who refuse to give. Within the verse, refusal to give is inferred. Interestingly, the writer puts those who dont give enough into the same camp as those who dont give at all. Because an individual doesn’t give what one should, they will miss out on rewards and fulfillment that comes from giving. In order to be happy and blessed, we must be willing to give liberally, out of abundance or poverty, to God above and the world around us.
