Looking To Eternity: What Heaven Notices - Humility

Updated: May 19

If you wanted to be seen by the world, how would you position yourself? You would get on the highest rung of the ladder, stand on the mountain tops, and you would get on the highest roof of the highest building — metaphorically that is. We know that if there are any who catch the eye of the world, it is those who are separated the most by height — status, influence, and recognition. This would be yet another area where God and the world are so polar. While the world focuses on height, God focuses on depth; the world looks at how high you position yourself above others, but God looks at how low you bring yourself before Him.

Another thing that is polar between God and the world is the idea of God—His identity and expectations. Many recognize God as great, but they impose the idea that His greatness brings confusion. They say He is too great to truly comprehend, express, or know His will. Meanwhile, God refers to Himself in other terms. He is not the God of confusion (1 Cor 14:33). His will is understandable (Eph 5:17). Sometimes His will is stated in simple terms. Consider Micah 6:8: “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

The world has convoluted who God is. Faithfulness to Him becomes a matter of individual interpretation. Meanwhile, God actually adorned flesh and lived a human life through Jesus, God the Son. Jesus points our attention to what gathers heaven's attention. It is undeniable when observing the mind of Christ — the very mind which is to be in every disciple (Phil 2:5) — that one of the chief characteristics God approves of is humility (Phil 2:6-11). Humility means casting aside self and exalting God’s will above our own. This is among the traits that lead to our exaltation (Jas 4:6, 10).

How will I get Heaven's attention? Humility. Why? Because then I will look like God’s own Son, the King of heaven. When God sees His Son in us, eternity with Him will follow.
